When driving in Portugal, as in any new country, there are several things which one should keep in mind. Driving in Portugal is done on the right hand sign, and speeds tend to be calculated in kilometres, not miles. On motorways, the speed limit is usually 120kph, or 74 miles an hour, with a minimum speed of 30-50kph or 18-31mph. On open roads, the speed limit is 90kph, or 55mph, while in urban areas the speed limit is around 50kph, or 31mph. Drivers who have held their license for less than a year are restricted to 90kph, or 55mph under any circumstances.
When driving in Portugal, you are likely to come across toll roads, which are relatively common. The word for toll is “portagem”. If you are unable to pay, a fine will be issued, so it’s important to ensure you have change on hand. When driving up to a toll booth, you may notice green lanes. These lanes are for drivers who subscribe to an automated paying system, and you should not use the lanes unless you have.
Visitors may bring a vehicle into Portugal for 180 days maximum during a calendar year, and they must provide the following information; a drivers license, issued in the country of origin if one is an EU citizen, or an international permit if not, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, proof of legal ownership of vehicle or a statement permitting use of the vehicle if it is borrowed or rental documentation, and a passport or ID card. Visitors who drive into Portugal must also register with the police within three business days of entry.
While driving in Portugal, it is important to keep a number of items on hand. These items include your driving license, the vehicle’s log book or rental contract, proof of insurance and an MOT certificate, if appropriate. You must also carry a red warning cone, in case of an accident or a breakdown. Under those circumstances, the cone would be placed at the read of the vehicle. Children under twelve years old must not travel in the front seat of the vehicle, and all passengers are required to wear seatbelts.
If you become a resident in Portugal, you must obtain a Portuguese driving license. To do this, you require the appropriate forms, and gather together a valid license, passport or IC card, residence permit, and two passport style photographs.
