Costa de Prata (Silver Coast)

Portugal’s Costa de Prata is located between Lisbon and Oporto, and is a growing market for British people who wish to buy property in Portugal.  Also known as the Silver Coast, the Costa de Prata is on the western side of Portugal, with miles of beautiful beaches.  There are sites to see inland as well, including unspoiled curative springs and lush vegetation in forested areas, as well as a multitude of beautiful buildings and wonderfully preserved towns.  Many places on the Silver Coast are listed as World Heritage Sites, including the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria, which was founded in 1952, and the well preserved border town of Almeida.

Travelling to the Costa de Prata is not difficult.  The Aeroporto da Portela de Sacavé, or Portella Airport is located within the city of Lisbon.  A number of airlines schedule flights from many Europeans capitals to Portela airport each day.  From the airport, one can hire a car, to easily and comfortably travel to wherever in the Silver Coast the property you wish to purchase or visit is located.  With one of Portugal’s major motorways running from Lisbon to Oporto, straight through the Costa de Prata area, driving is probably the easiest way to get around.

Like most of Portugal, the Costa de Prata has a mild, temperate climate, with long hot summers and mild winters.  Swimming in the sea is comfortable right through October – something that may be attractive to anyone who’s lived through a British winter.  Water sports such as snorkelling or scuba diving are popular pastimes in some areas of the Silver Coast.  The Costa de Prata enjoys over three thousand hours of sun each year, something that serves to make the beautiful beaches of the Silver Coast ever more enjoyable.

There are many wide open spaces along the Costa de Prata, and buying land for development is fairly popular.  Land can be snapped up very cheaply, in some cases for less than £10,000.  Property which needs renovation can also be bought for relatively low initial costs, although do bear in mind how much you will need to spend on renovation.  Those who wish to buy complete properties in the Costa de Prata area will find one or two bedroom apartments for between £50,000 and £100,000, while villas cost only slightly more.  Buying property on Portugal’s Silver Coast may well be a very wise investment.
