Located in southern Portugal, Évora and is becoming more and more popular with British expatriates wishing to buy property in Portugal. Ranked third in Portugal’s list of most liveable cities, in a survey published yearly by Expresso, Évora is the chief city of the Alentejo district of Portugal. Like many areas in Portugal, the centre of Évora has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and with its calm, old fashioned charm, it’s easy to understand why. Évora has a number of sites of historical interest to visit, including churches and palaces, all with a unique exquisite beauty.
The closest international airport to Évora is the Portela de Sacavem, located approximately 4.5 kilometres outside of Lisbon. From there, one can travel by train to the city of Évora, or to wherever in the area the property you wish to visit is located. Another option is to travel into Spain by ferry, and then drive into Portugal, although this may be less convenient. There are flights to the Portela de Sacavem every day, from airports in London, Liverpool, Dublin and Paris.
Like many areas of Portugal, Évora has long hot summers, with cooler winters. The summer months are from approximately May to September, with temperatures that can rise to 30C in July and August. These summer months get very little rain; although June receives up to 30 millimetres over the month, July and August get less than 10mm. Winters in Evora last from approximately November to January, with average temperatures of 13C to 15C.
Property in Évora is relatively cheap compared to the UK and other areas of Portugal. Buying land off-plan is an option you may wish to explore, as it could work out cheaper than buying a fully built property. However, completed properties aren’t all that expensive, with one bedroom villas available for around £60,000. A two bedroom villa could cost around £88,000 while a three bedroom apartment will be a little more, at £83,000.
Prices do vary slightly depending on where exactly in the area the property is, but, as a general rule, buying property in Évora is still relatively cheap. As with buying property anywhere in Portugal, it pays to shop around.
